When I started preparing for this recital, we were in the midst of a global pandemic. Death has permeated every home and community and been on the forefront of my mind. As we continue to live in a changed world, I thought it might be beneficial to take time and reflect on both life and death. The first set of songs are focusing on death as seen through the lens of German Fairytales. Often times, our first experiences with death as children are through fairy tales like Humpty dumpty or the Three little pigs. The next set, Finzi’s Let Us Garlands Bring, incorporate both death and the youthful hope for a better tomorrow in his setting of Shakespeare’s texts. The final two sets are all about love, the most powerful force in the human experience and the emotion that heightens every aspect of our lives. Please enjoy.
